First Wednesday evening of each month for 12 months from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (The first meeting will be on January 8 so as to avoid meeting on New Year’s Day!)
Join Darla Ives in creating your own unique version of this 58″x74″ modern sampler quilt over a period of 12 months! For just $27 per month, participants will receive monthly instruction from Darla, a copy of Tula Pink’s book entitled 100 Modern Quilt Blocks, 30 fat quarters from the Sew Memphis shelves (student’s choice), 2.5 yards of solid sashing fabric (student’s choice), 4 yards of backing fabric (student’s choice), and warm and white batting. In addition, each student will receive a color wheel at the January meeting, when Darla will discuss fabric selection and help students begin to design their quilts!
Each month, beginning in February, Darla will highlight blocks from the book and share her shortcuts and helpful tips. Many of the blocks are beautifully simple, and students will be able to complete four each month. Several of the blocks involve some basic paper-piecing techniques, so this is a great chance to learn/practice paper-piecing in a fun, non-intimidating environment. As the year comes to a close, Darla will go over how to put the quilt top together and give tips on making the quilt sandwich, quilting, and machine-binding.
Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and beverages to BOM meetings and to use this time to share progress, tips, and motivation.
Participants must be comfortable with machine-sewing and rotary cutting. Students may bring their own machines or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines.
Sign up by December 20 to participate. This series will proceed with a minimum of 6 students, so help us spread the word! The Block of the Month fee may be paid up front via eventbrite or by visiting the shop. Those who want to pay in monthly installments of $27 per month must sign up in person and allow their credit information to be kept securely on file at Sew Memphis. Sew Memphis will charge credit cards during the first week of every month.
For a better look at Darla’s beautiful finished example, visit Sew Memphis after Thanksgiving, when her quilt will be proudly displayed! Participants’ finished quilts will have the same basic look as the example (colorful modern blocks against a solid background) but each quilt will vary according to students’ unique fabric selections!
