Drop-In Open Instruction

Open Instruction during the week of August 18 – august 24 will be:
  • Wednesday, August 20 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 21 from 1:45 – 4:45 (emphasis on quilting, binding, free-motion, etc)
  • Sunday, August 24 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The cost is $20. No need to sign up. Just bring whatever you’re working on and your machine (if you’ve got one), and sew in the company of someone who can help and answer questions. machine-sewing 101 for kids and adults

We’ve added another session of this popular workshop on Saturday, August 23 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

 

This workshop is for adults and kids ages 8 and up but 6 & 7 year-olds may attend with adult friends. (Adult/child pairs need only to sign up for one spot.)

 

Whether you just got a new sewing machine or you’ve had one for years that you’re afraid to touch, this workshop is for you!* Just bring your machine and your manual, and join Sarah Terry for step-by-step instruction on how to thread the needle, wind the bobbin, and perform other amazing feats! This workshop is for basic sewing only. No toy machines, embroidery machines, or machines that utilize computerized design programs please!

 

Participants will apply these skills toward making pincushions to use in future sewing projects.

 

All supplies are included in the $35 workshop fee.

 

*Those who do not own machines but would like to take advantage of this beginning sewing class may rent one of four shop machines for the workshop. Machine-rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with tickets to the Machine-Sewing 101 workshop. Girls’ Peasant Dress Series

This is a two-session series that meets on Wednesday, September 10 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 13 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m.

 

Sewists with basic machine knowledge are invited to join Claire Steinriede  in sewing sweet fall dresses for little girls (sizes 1-6)! Adults only, please. Students will learn basic garment-making skills, including how to follow a pattern and how to use elastic to add interest to sleeves and necklines. Sleeves can be long or short, and the garment can be created as a dress or a top to wear with pants.

 

Bring your own machine or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines. Machine-rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with tickets to the Girl’s Peasant Dress Series. Those who prefer to sign up in person or over the phone (via credit card) may do so during Sew Memphis business hours.

 

In addition to the $45 class fee, students will need to purchase/provide up to 1.5 yards of fabric (depending upon size), the dress pattern, coordinating thread, optional ribbon for embellishing, and elastic. All supplies will be available at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount. A more detailed supply list will be sent in the confirmation email to those who register.

Staple Dress Workshop

This one-day workshop will meet on Saturday, September 20 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Participants may break for lunch and take advantage of nearby eateries in Overton Square! In addition, the instuctor will be at Sew Memphis on Wednesday, September 16th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. to help with fabric selection and pattern preparation for those who want to make the most of Saturday’s workshop time.

 

Adults with basic machine-sewing experience are invited to join Amie Plumley, author of the Sewing School book series, for this day of fall dress-making! Students will learn the basics of following a pattern, installing side-seam pockets, elastic waist shirring, and hemming. Machine-rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with tickets to the Staple Dress workshop. Those who prefer to sign up in person or over the phone (via credit card) may do so during Sew Memphis business hours.

 

Students will need to purchase/provide up to 3 yards of fabric (depending upon size), coordinating thread, elastic thread, an empty bobbin for elastic thread, the Staple Dress pattern, and red-dot pattern-tracing paper (optional). Quilting 101 Workshop

This is an extended one-day workshop on Saturday, September 27 from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Participants are welcome to take advantage of the many Overton Square eateries during a short lunch break!

 

Those with basic sewing machine knowledge who want to venture into the fun, expressive world of quilting with the benefit of an experienced guide will love Betty’s Nowak’s Quilting 101! Students will learn Betty’s tips for fabric selection as well as how to sew the famed quarter-inch quilting seam! Betty will demonstrate several piecing methods and allow for students to practice under her direction. Next, participants will learn how to layer the quilt back, front, and batting in order to create the “quilt sandwich” and play with some machine-quilting techniques on sample “sandwiches.” Finally, Betty will share her quilt binding techniques and offer resources for further instruction on each of these steps. While students will not leave this workshop with a finished product, they will gain an overview and some experience with the entire quilting process and be ready to tackle their first quilts! Some pieced segments from this workshop may be incorporated into future quilts.

 

Students may bring their own machines or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines. Machine rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with tickets to the Quilting 101 workshop. Those who prefer to sign up in person or over the phone may do so during Sew Memphis business hours.

Zen and the Art of Hand-Piecing

This is a one-session workshop that will meet on Sunday, September 28 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

 

Learn this English Paper Piecing technique from Sarah Terry and take your craftiness out of your sewing space and into the world! These hand-sewn hexies are the perfect companion to porch-rocking and fireside-sitting. Sewists, ages 8-108 are welcome!

Sarah will teach two different shape configurations as well as how to use paper to sew “Y-seams” and gain precision. Students will need to purchase/provide paper scissors, fabric scissors, a hand-sewing needle, thread, and fabric pieces that are at least 3.5″ x 3.5″ and 4″x2″. All supplies (except paper scissors) can be purchased at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.

Beginning Hand-Embroidery Workshop

This is a one-session workshop that will meet on Saturday, October 4 from 9:30 a.m. – noon.

 

Back by popular demand, and just in time for hand-sewing-by-the-fire-season, this workshop is your chance to join teacher Heidi Rupke in creating lovely embroidered tea towels while learning the skills and supplies needed for other embroidery projects.

 

The workshop will include instruction on how to apply and follow an embroidery pattern as well as an introduction to the stem, split, satin, back, and French knot stitches.
Beginners are welcome, and students ages 8-108 are welcome to attend!
In addition to the $30 workshop fee, students will need to purchase/provide tea towels, embroidery hoops, embroidery floss, patterns, and needles. All are available for purchase at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.

 

Participants who have completed Beginning Embroidery (and others who want to extend their stitching abilities) are invited to join Heidi in Continuing Embroidery on November 1.

Shift Lab

 

This is a two-session series that meets on Thursday, October 15  from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

 

Sewists with basic machine knowledge are invited to create retro modern shift dresses with Claire Steinriede! Adults only, please. Participants will use body measurements, pattern templates (sizes XS – XL), sample shifts, and their own design ideas to create custom, one-of-a-kind dresses just in time for the fall chill and boot season! Create a simple over-the-head shift, or experiment with zippers, embellished sleeves, and the like. Claire will share her zipper tips and variations, and fellow classmates will be there to give input and assist! Leave with a personalized pattern that you can use again and again!

 

 

Participants will need to purchase/provide 2-4 yards of fabric (depending upon size), coordinating thread, red dot pattern paper, and a 22″ zipper (optional). All supplies are available for purchase at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount. A more detailed supply list will be included in the confirmation email sent to those who register.
