Dahlia Dress Series

This is a two-session series that meets on Thursday, March 26 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 28 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Adults with basic garment-sewing skills are invited to join Haley Franklin  in making this classic, year-round Dahlia dress by Colette Patterns. Haley worked in costume design in Los Angeles before her move to Memphis, and her sewing and design skills are currently debuted in Ballet Memphis productions.

The Dahlia dress is an intermediate dress pattern. Students will get the chance to learn/review zipper closures, waist yokes, strategically-placed gathers, and facing short cuts in the process of sewing this beautiful, custom-fit garment. Participants may choose to make the 3/4-sleeved raglan-style version or a strappy summer cocktail dress version. The pattern fits sizes 0 – 26.

Participants may bring their own machines or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines. Machine-rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with Dahlia Dress Series tickets. Those who prefer not to sign up online may sign up in person or over the phone (via credit card) during Sew Memphis business hours.

Students will need to purchase/provide the Dahlia dress pattern, 3 yards of 1/4″ double-fold bias tape, a 14″ invisable zipper, thread, a hand-sewing needle, and 2.5 – 3.5 yards of fabric, depending upon size and version preferred. Voiles and cotton lawn fabrics work well. All supplies are available at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.

Color Wisdom Workshop

This workshop will meet on Sunday, March 29 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

How do you select colors for your quilts, your art, your home, and your wardrobe? Do you use a color wheel or choose the same “go-to” hues over and over again? If your relationship to color feels overly cerebral or habitual, or if you just want to spend an afternoon playing with color, this workshop is for you! No prior skills are required.

Join Mary Allison Cates in creating your own intuitive color palettes using a process originated by modern fabric designer Amy Butler. You’ll move through the fun and light-hearted steps that Mary Allison learned from Amy and assemble several unique colorways that are likely to be different from your usual choices yet true expressions of your spirit.

Basic supplies are included in the workshop fee. In addition, students will need to gather color cards from paint stores in hues you love. If you have an entire paint deck you don’t mind cutting up from Sherwin-Williams or the like, bring it too! Students will also need to bring a large assortment of magazine pages, photographs, fabrics, ribbon, and anything else two-dimensional that contains color and pattern that inspires you.

Those who prefer not to sign up online may do so in person or via phone during Sew Memphis business hours.

This workshop is for adults and kids ages 8 and up but 6 & 7 year-olds may attend with adult friends. (Adult/child pairs may sign up for one spot and share a machine.)

Whether you just got a new sewing machine or you’ve had one for years that you’re afraid to touch, this workshop is for you!* Just bring your machine and your manual, and join Sarah Terry for step-by-step instruction on how to thread the needle, wind the bobbin, and perform other amazing feats! This workshop is for basic sewing only. No toy machines, embroidery machines, or machines that work in conjunction with separate computer software please! Also, if you’ve inherited a machine from a friend or family member, please make sure it is in working order before class.

Participants will apply these skills toward making pincushions to use in future sewing projects.

Hexie Variation Quilting Series

Two sessions: Saturdays, April 11 and 18, from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Experienced beginners and intermediate sewists are invited to explore a myriad of hex-abilities with Betty Nowak! Participants will use special rulers to create hexagons, which may then be turned into herringbone, flower, and lightning bolt shapes, just to name a few. Pairing hexies with triangles will yield even more variations! Prior to the series, students will need to know how to use a rotary cutter and sew a quarter-inch seam.

Students will spend the first class learning the many hexie variations, choosing fabric, and coming up with unique quilt designs. Between classes, participants might want to do some pre-cutting and sewing. The second class will be about constructing and arranging quilt blocks into the optimum quilt top.

In addition to the series fee, students will need to purchase/provide two hexie rulers, thread, and three to four half-yard cuts of fabric for the first class. More fabric will be needed for the second class but should not be purchased until students have decided upon the design and size of their quilt tops. Yardage will vary according to these factors. All supplies are available at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.

Bring your own machine or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines. Machine rental tickets must be purchased in conjunction with tickets to the Hexie Variation Quilting Series. Those who prefer to sign up in person or over the phone during Sew Memphis busniess hours may do so by stopping by or phoning the shop.
