Vintage Quilt Revival BLOCK OF THE MONTH

This series will meet on the first Wednesday evening of each month for 11 months from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. (The first meeting will be on February 4.)

Intermediate quilters (as well as adventurous or advanced beginners) are invited to join Sarah Terry in creating their own unique versions of this 20-block quilt that combine classic patterns with modern fabric! For just $24 per month, participants will receive monthly instruction from Sarah, a copy of Vintage Quilt Revival: 22 Modern Designs from Classic Blocks by Blakesley, Heinrich, and Jones, a CD with 12 printable foundation piecing template patterns, up to 40 fat quarters from the Sew Memphis shelves (student’s choice), and up to 4 yards of Sew Memphis solid fabric (also student’s choice). Sarah will discuss fabric selection at the first meeting and help students begin to design their quilts!

The Vintage Quilt Sampler has three basic variations, and students are welcome to choose their favorites. Each variation is a different size (72″x90″, 63″x80″, and 59″x75″) and requires different amounts of fabric. All quilt top fabric for each variation is covered in the cost of the BOM. For a look at some Vintage Quilt Sampler examples as well as some pics of individual blocks, check out this Flickr pool.

Each month, Sarah will highlight blocks from the book and share her shortcuts and helpful tips. Several of the blocks involve some basic paper-piecing techniques, so this is a great chance to learn/practice paper-piecing in a fun, non-intimidating environment. As the year comes to a close, Sarah will go over how to put the quilt top together and give tips on making the quilt sandwich, quilting, and binding.

Participants are encouraged to bring snacks and beverages to BOM meetings and to use this time to share progress, tips, and motivation.

Participants must be comfortable with machine-sewing and rotary cutting. Students may bring their own machines or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines.

Sign up by January 31 to participate. This series will proceed with a minimum of 6 students, so help us spread the word! The Block of the Month fee may be paid up front via Eventbrite or by visiting the shop. Those who want to pay in monthly installments of $24 per month must sign up in person and allow their credit information to be kept securely on file at Sew Memphis. Sew Memphis will charge credit cards during the first week of every month.

For a better look at Sarah’s beautiful finished quilt top example, visit Sew Memphis where it is proudly displayed! Participants’ finished quilts will have the same basic look as the example (colorful modern blocks against a solid background) but each quilt will vary according to students’ unique fabric selections and selected quilt variation!

Strip Tease Quilting Series

Two sessions: Saturdays, March 7 and 14, from 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Experienced beginners and intermediate sewists are invited to check out what Betty Nowak’s got up her sleeve! In fact, participants will use special rulers to create fabric sleeves of their own, which will be cut and arranged into fabulous quilt tops. (The rest of your clothing will remain on and in tact.) While the finished products might look neat and orderly, the process is full of surprises! Betty will also talk about making the quilt sandwich, machine-quilting techniques, and the binding process.

In addition to the series fee, students will need to purchase/provide one Strip Tube ruler, thread, 1/2 of a yard of 4 different fabrics (1 dark, 2 mediums, and 1 light), 1/4 of a yard of inner border fabric, 5/8 of a yard of outer border fabric, 1 and 1/4 yards of backing fabric, 3/8 of a yard of binding fabric, and batting. The above measurements will yield a 40″x40″ quilt. Those who want to make larger quilts are welcome to do so using fabric measurements provided in the confirmation email. All supplies are available at Sew Memphis at a 10% class discount.

Bring your own machine or sign up early to rent one of four shop machines. Machine rental ticktes must be purchased in conjunction with ticktes to the Strip Tease Series. Those who prefer to sign up in person or over the phone during Sew Memphis busniess hours may do so by stopping by or phoning the shop.

Dahlia Dress Series

This is a two-session series that meets on Thursday, March 26 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 28 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Adults with basic garment-sewing skills are invited to join Haley Franklin  in making this classic, year-round Dahlia dress by Colette Patterns. Haley worked in costume design in Los Angeles before her move to Memphis, and her sewing and design skills are currently debuted in Ballet Memphis productions.

The Dahlia dress is an intermediate dress pattern. Students will get the chance to learn/review zipper closures, waist yokes, strategically-placed gathers, and facing short cuts in the process of sewing this beautiful, custom-fit garment. Participants may choose to make the 3/4-sleeved raglan-style version or a strappy summer cocktail dress version. The pattern fits sizes 0 – 26.

Color Wisdom Workshop

This workshop will meet on Sunday, March 29 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

How do you select colors for your quilts, your art, your home, and your wardrobe? Do you use a color wheel or choose the same “go-to” hues over and over again? If your relationship to color feels overly cerebral or habitual, or if you just want to spend an afternoon playing with color, this workshop is for you! No prior skills are required.

Join Mary Allison Cates in creating your own intuitive color palettes using a process originated by modern fabric designer Amy Butler. You’ll move through the fun and light-hearted steps that Mary Allison learned from Amy and assemble several unique colorways that are likely to be different from your usual choices yet true expressions of your spirit.

Basic supplies are included in the workshop fee. In addition, students will need to gather color cards from paint stores in hues you love. If you have an entire paint deck you don’t mind cutting up from Sherwin-Williams or the like, bring it too! Students will also need to bring a large assortment of magazine pages, photographs, fabrics, ribbon, and anything else two-dimensional that contains color and pattern that inspires you.

Those who prefer not to sign up online may do so in person or via phone during Sew Memphis business hours.
